Wild Rice Cooked in an Instant Pot

Instant Pot Wild Rice

About me:

Hi, I’m Chantill, owner of The Shorelunch Cafe and wildricesoups.com. I’m a mom of ten and I love to cook. I created a wild rice soup mix because I wanted to share my love of cooking with my customers. I wanted them to be able to make a big batch of soup that would taste just as good as if they ordered it in the restaurant. I didn’t want to sacrifice quality by adding dehydrated vegetables, so I came up with a way that you could make this soup at home and have it taste the same as if you walked into the restaurant and ordered a bowl. The best thing is that you can make it your own by adding ingredients that suit your family. They will never know that it came from a mix.

What is wild rice?

Wild rice is a grass that is native to North America and grows in shallow water in marshes and along the shores of lakes. The plant can grow up to 10 feet tall and produces small, black seeds. Wild rice is usually harvested in the fall, after the seeds have ripened. The plants are cut down and the seeds are separated from the straw. The seeds are then cleaned and dried.

Wild rice is harvested by hand in the fall. The process begins by cutting the stalks of the wild rice plants with a sharp knife. The stalks are then gathered and brought to a threshing area, where they are beaten with a flail to release the grain. The grain is then winnowed to remove the chaff and straw.

  • 1 Instant Pot

  • 2 cups wild rice
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/4 tsp salt or a couple bouillon cubes

  • Place 2 cups of wild rice in a strainer and give it a quick rinse in the sink.
  • Once the rice has been rinsed add the rice to the Instant Pot.
  • Pour 3 cups of water over the rice and stir until the rice is submerged.
  • Add 1/4 salt or bouillon cubes to the rice and water and stir until combined.
  • Plug the Instant Pot in, place the cover on top and make sure it is in a locked position and the valve is in the sealed .
  • Hit the 'Manual' setting and set the time for 42 min.
  • I found 42 minutes to be the right amount of time for rice that is chewy but still has a bit of a bite.
  • Once the rice has cooked for 42 minutes allow the steam to release naturally for 10-12 minutes. After this time, you can vent any remaining steam.
